China's vegetable basket project solves the food supply problem for 1.4 billion people

The development of China's "vegetable basket project" has mainly gone through four stages.

The first stage was from 1988 to 1994. During this period, there were 8,220 specialized markets for agricultural and sideline products, which initially formed a new pattern of large markets and large circulation in China.

The second stage was from 1995 to 1999, during which the "vegetable basket project" was mainly characterized by increasing base construction, urban and rural cooperation, improving scientific and technological content, and exploring new circulation methods. By 1999, the supply and demand situation of China's "vegetable basket" had changed from a long-term shortage to a basic balance of supply and demand, and surplus in good years.

The third stage was from 2000 to 2009. During this period, the "vegetable basket project" focused on optimizing the structure, improving the quality of "vegetable basket" products and increasing farmers' income. It was driven by deepening reform, expanding opening up and accelerating agricultural modernization to achieve coordinated development of the "vegetable basket project" and the ecological environment, and strive to improve the quality of life of urban and rural residents.

The fourth stage began in 2010. According to the new situation and new characteristics of the production and marketing pattern of "vegetable basket" products, the State Council of China made a strategic deployment to implement a new round of "vegetable basket" projects, requiring the coordinated construction of production capacity, market system, quality and safety, regulation and guarantee, and accelerating the transformation of development methods.
