China Shipbuilding delivers 16,000TEU container ship, equipped with the world's largest B-type LNG fuel tank

The 16,000TEU container ship "Maria Cristina" built by Dalian Shipbuilding and China Shipbuilding Trade for MSC Mediterranean Shipping was delivered, equipped with the world's largest B-type LNG fuel tank.

According to reports, the ship is the first ship of 8 LNG dual-fuel 16,000TEU container ships undertaken by Dalian Shipbuilding for MSC Mediterranean Shipping, with a total length of about 366 meters, a beam of 51 meters, and a depth of 30.2 meters.

This type of ship is equipped with the world's largest 9% nickel steel 13,000 cubic meter B-type LNG fuel tank. It is the first time in China to realize the full process of independent research and development of B-type LNG fuel tanks, filling the domestic technical gap.

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, from January to September 2024, China's shipbuilding completion volume was 36.34 million deadweight tons, a year-on-year increase of 18.2%; new orders were 87.11 million deadweight tons, a year-on-year increase of 51.9%; as of the end of September, the backlog of orders was 193.30 million deadweight tons, a year-on-year increase of 44.3%.

Data show that from January to September, China's three major shipbuilding indicators (shipbuilding completion volume, new orders, and backlog orders) accounted for 55.1%, 74.7% and 61.4% of the global total in terms of deadweight tonnage, respectively.
