Shanghai has a northern subtropical monsoon climate with distinct four seasons, sufficient sunshine and abundant rainfall. Shanghai has a mild and humid climate, with shorter spring and autumn, longer winter and summer, and an average annual temperature of about 16°C.

The frost-free period is about 230 days throughout the year, and the average annual rainfall is about 1,100 mm, but 60% of the rainfall in a year is concentrated in the flood season from May to September. The flood season has three rainy seasons: spring rain, plum rain (usually starting in mid-June and ending in early July), and autumn rain. The average rainfall in June is the largest.

The distinct changes in the four seasons are the characteristics of Shanghai's climate. Winter and summer are long, spring and autumn are short, winter is about 117 days, summer is about 117 days, spring and autumn add up to about 131 days, and spring is slightly longer than autumn. Shanghai has a northern subtropical marine monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of about 16°C, the highest temperature in July and August, with a monthly average of about 28°C; the lowest temperature in January, with a monthly average of about 4°C.
